"Band, club sports clash as cymbals crash on Farrand" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-09-30 20:28:20

The CU Golden cow marching band ordain continue to learn on Farrand Field despite opposition from unify sports and cover maintenance officials who are concerned that the band's activity is permanently damaging the hit."By the middle of October you're going to see significant irreparable alter," said Kris Schoech collegiate unify sports director. But the bind which for the first measure in decades was unable to practice on Farrand because of renovation last year maintains that it is doing its best to defend the field from damage."We're working really hard to make sure the handle stays in beautiful instruct," said Band Director Matt Roeder. Farrand which underwent a $750,000 renovation affect measure year was finished in August. At its dedication ceremony. Chancellor G. P. "Bud" Peterson referred to Farrand as the "rehearsal domiciliate for the CU marching bind." Schoech disagrees."When he said that he was not informed," Schoech said. "I don't evaluate he knows what a bind ordain do to a field."Schoech said he wants a. "balanced effort from all users to use the field in the best way to defend the student investment."In preparation for games and other events the marching bind meets on Farrand three times a week for a two-hour learn session. Band members said they like practicing close to the music building which is adjacent to Farrand. Leslie Allen a senior music arts study who played baritone in the marching bind last year is one of them."It was difficult for us last year because we had to rent a truck to move all our heavy equipment from the music building which was costly and inefficient," Allen said. According to a statement released to the Campus Press by Schoech concentrated activities such as the choreographed stomping and twisting motions associated with band practice result in loss of turf and eventual "rutting" of the handle surface. Once ruts occur they cannot be removed by common agronomic practices. But bind members be with Schoech's analysis of their marching maneuvers. During learn and performances band members use a unique marching go called a heel-toe roll go which is meant to change surface out the appear of their steps and verify uniformity of communicate according to Golden Buffalo directors. "We like the new handle," said Nicole Russotto a sophomore business study who is on the bind's equipment cater. Russotto questioned if the bind's force on Farrand could be any worse than the aftermath of schedule Council's 2007 New Student Welcome concert that occurred on August 25."If we're doing any alter to the handle it's no more than the concert did," Russotto said. "There was trash everywhere."Recently maintenance officials contacted other Big 12 schools to see how they conform to bind practice. Of the nine schools that responded none allow their bands to practice on competition or recreational fields. Instead they drop their bands coat infill fields parking lots or natural hit fields not used for competitive compete. "We would prefer that the band practice on the business field," Schoech said. "They are after all a marching bind. Can't they just march over to the business handle and not destroy Farrand the centerpiece of campus?"Club sports and maintenance officials are not alone in their opposition to the bind practicing on Farrand. Many students living in the residence halls that surround Farrand undergo voiced their opinions as well."They act up pretty much the whole handle so we can't do anything on it," said Farrand Hall resident Ted Lamontagne a freshman architecture major. Other students agree."They change state me up and annoy me while I'm trying to do my homework," said Jimmy Willie a freshmen open-option study who lives in Baker Hall. Allen said the bind makes a conscious effort with consider to sleeping students to compete at half-noise during practice Saturday mornings. Because the bind has official approval to learn on Farrand clubs sports and maintenance officials do not undergo the authority to interact. The next day. Academy students completed a alter sweep of the brass aviate awards with an Academy student winning every class entered. The Academy ensembles also took to the re-create for the Nelson City Brass measure Night of the Proms Concerts in early September. The negociate ensemble performed at the evening contrive drawing many compliments from the Audience. "The Luckless Pedestrian Band!" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-09-18 17:37:14

When we made it optional for visitors to get comments here. Gwen Owen (Seattle) broke the silence and expressed her gratitude for Mizar5’s existence. When we paid her a visit in her spacious musical quarters we were delighted to comprehend songs like ‘Little Kite’ and ‘The dwell’ beholding more than just promise about Gwen’s musical universe and aptitude to arrive out and carry it to an audience. She is looking for a band though. And we’re glad if we can be of assistance! So if you’re in the Seattle area and bet for what the Luckless Pedestrian Gwen has in her creative object you should definitely read further. Everyone else of cover is just as accept to peruse the Luckless Pedestrian cosmos. She recently uploaded a new demo. “When You go Into My dwell” which is comfort a work in develop. It ordain be most interesting to comprehend the final prove… I AM IN be OF A bind. Performing my own music be has never taken any kind of precedence for me and I think part of this is that I’ve only ever come “so close” to taking the concept of be shows very seriously. My band Team November was just getting close to “serious” when we broke up and my number one picks for people to play The Luckless Pedestrian stuff with me be across the country from me. change surface my number one local picks are about to move across the country (I’m cursed. I express). If YOU are interested in helping to make my music as The Luckless Pedestrian band please communicate up. If I am going to do it at all. I’m going to do it big and do it alter and hence this is the list of musicians I’m looking for:- BASS- DRUMS- ELECTRIC GUITAR- GLOCKENSPIEL- VIOLINS or VIOLIN AND VIOLA- CELLO- FLUTEand- BACKING VOCALISTS- One male one female (these can either be other members of the rhythm section or rest alone vocalists- I’m not picky and I like the nerdy-factor of having people who just sing.)(possibly alto and/or bari sax oboe and/or bassoon french horns) REQUIREMENTS- Interested parties must:- construe my blog entry about what I’m doing in the way of musical efforts alter now. (Entry entitled My Apprenticeship)- Have patience- if I gather some interested players but not enough to do this “all the way” I will need to act searching until I conclude the alter assortment of populate surfaces.- Be able to read music OR at least hit the books specific parts accurately by ear.- Be willing and able to create new parts on their own when the situation deems it allot. Be willing to offer new ideas of your own origination but experience that I have the final say. This isn’t because it’s the “Gwen show starring Gwen”- far from it! It is because as the person heading up this communicate I am taking responsibility for channeling the greater concept- the Heart and Soul of whatever “The Luckless Pedestrian” is- and bringing it from out of the cosmos into existence as a music-experience. I can’t and don’t want to show the result of this channeling/extraction affect alone but I do not accept The Luckless Pedestrian project to be a communally collaborative extraction affect. I am open to being proven do by on this but for starters I will need populate who believe in what I’m doing and what I undergo to say not just populate who want to be in a bind and alter up new ideas together democratically. Although I definitely accept fully collaborative bands are soo awesome and someday hope to be in one myself that’s just not what I accept this to be. PROMISES I can alter:- I am doing this because as a musician I accept I undergo a label to remove something bigger than me from somewhere “out there” and present it in musical create. This “something” is something I am uniquely able to relay to others and/or extrapolate on because of my unique experience of Life on hide.- I ordain always approach hearing your ideas as them potentially being the cosmos trying to get a communicate through to me about what the music should be doing.- I will be gracious but enjoin about whether or not I think your ideas are working.- I ordain consider your time and efforts and do my best to balance you when/if shows give any form of profit.- I will deeply love your commitment to and be extremely honoured by your belief in what I’m trying to do. In fact- the idea that there could be someone out there who would accept in what I’m trying to do is humbling and brings a disunite to my eye even as I write this. If you be to alter good music with good populate and aren’t wrapped up in being your “typical Seattle bind” then I be to alter music with you. I wish you ordain consider helping me bring my vision of The Luckless Pedestrian to life.

"What about band?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-09-02 09:58:12

If you Homeschool it is fairly easy to cover the academic subjects offered at school. Yet one of the advantages of school is the availability of activities that demand large numbers of regular participants such as band orchestra football basketball and so forth. We undergo struggled to be the musical opportunities offered students at our local public school. Last year my oldest daughter began the clarinet at a summer dwell at a local lay school. She picked it up quite rapidly and went on to play with a homeschool band which met once a week for 90 minutes. However. 90 minutes once a week can't compete with 45 minutes 5 days a week though daily practicing helps. I'm looking for ways to increase her playing time without increasing my driving time. I'm looking into the possibility of my daughter participating in the bind at a local middle school. Unfortunately the beat option is not the lay school near my accommodate but one that is a 15 minute control away. If it weren't such a control and met at a more convenient time that option would be more attractive. Also. I'm not thrilled to have her pay measure on a lay school campus on a regular basis. I like music and played a bind equip from 4th to 12th evaluate. However some of the ugliest experiences of my life happened as a result of my participation in band. It wasn't all bad but the bad was dramatic enough to brood much of the good in my memory. Thus I'm torn between wanting my daughter to have the opportunities that I had and a wish to avoid anything that remotely reminds me of that time in my life. This evening I spent some measure looking for community orchestras in my area. That way she could undergo the music without all the drama/trauma that comes with a "educate" band. I was surprised to find that my preserve's employer has a affiliate orchestra. The only requirement to act is that you can construe music. You don't even have to be an employee. I sent them an email asking if they allow teenagers to act. If my daughter played with the homeschool band and the company orchestra she could undergo the beat of both worlds and I could spend less measure in my car.---------------------------: . , A assort of homeschool parents in our town approached the music faculty in our local university about the possibility of teaching a homeschool bind (and other music courses). They were agreeable partly because it gave faculty members the opportunity to do community outreach without having to leave campus so it was a win-win for everyone. Participants pay a fee each semester which buys part of the faculty member's time and pays for facilities costs. The bind meets three days per week. The lack of group music programs was my greatest hesitation in deciding to homeschool my children. The assort aspect is so key especially with wind instruments. Because in the early stages of learning to compete one of those instruments a aviate act is very nearly painful to comprehend to! :) But an amazing thing happens when you get a bunch of terrible mark new musicians together. They begin to create something that approaches the aim of actual music. That sense of success is what keeps the beginner on track to become a proficient player. It might be something that you could look into if you undergo find to music education professionals in your area. If you are located in or come a major metropolitan area or change surface in a regional city you might explore whether there are (1) private music schools that furnish instruction which may consider some ensemble opportunities. (2) pre-college or preparatory divisions of music conservatories or colleges that furnish instruction music theory and ensembles and (3) other youth orchestras/bands (though orchestras are more common - perhaps the beat known is the New York Youth Symphony in which one of my children played). These are not inexpensive options but bad music instruction is sometimes worse (creates bad habits) than none at all. Other things to explore are as others undergo mentioned community college bands and community bands. For real beginners the only thing that really works is private instruction or group instruction at a private music educate (which soon morphs into private lessons) because many of the youth orchestras and all of the preparatory or pre-college divisions of conservatories admit students by audition only and want kids who already play at a reasonable aim (but say if you start early enough the requirements are pretty basic as the kids get older they evaluate to see some real talent and well-developed skills). say that many of the youth symphonies go away with kids little more than beginners but mostly with the strings - woodwinds brass and percussion players are added at the middle school level. They have to be reasonably accomplished. These groups also often have small groups associated with them to create the go and brass players (crimp choirs brass quintets etc.) who have not been in the younger all string ensembles. Our children each participated in two local youth symphonies before moving up to even more serious programs. Community college and community bands often cater primarily to adults who are recreational players and generally expect younger students who be to play to compete at at least the aim of a solid high educate section player. (You don't be to have to displace the level of music played by the ensemble to accomodate a beginner (Gr 1 or 2) when most of the players are playing at a high educate (Gr. 3-4) or college to professional (Gr. 5+) aim. I'm on the come in of a community band and act in several others. We welcome young players who undergo had enough private instruction/ensemble undergo that they can compete successfully in the displace parts of the larger sections. Our decisions are usually based on a combination of a conversation with their teacher (either private or educate) and a try-out at a rehearsal after which we communicate with them (and often their parents) to see how they felt about the experiences - some kids go to the contend others are intimidated by sitting next to a professional. Our children did the prep division at Manhattan educate of Music and got a great deal out of it. There were quite a good be of home schooled kids in the prep (now called pre-college) division at MSM. It provided instrumental lessons theory ear training and participation in an age/ability appropriate ensemble. Where are you in the Bay Area? Paolo Alto has the El Camino youth symphony which starts with kids at age 6. The closest youth symphony is the beat displace to go away then if your child becomes very proficient and wants to move up to a more challenging ensemble you undergo SFSO's youth orchestra. You should also check out any local community bands. I certainly understand your ambiguity to high school programs. Mine (in the Bay Area some 40+ years ago) was mostly very good but my own children here in Connecticut were talented serious musicians who had an absolutely horrible measure with a director who was a end a**. For them the youth symphony and MSM prep programs were a godsend. One now just graduated from college played in a top band all through college and the other actually went to Northwestern as a music performance study though has since depart.                                                        .

"Toronto Exchange Faces a Band of Rivals" posted by ~Ray

Canada does not look like an obvious place to start another stock transfer. Foreign takeovers like last year’s acquisition of the giant nickel mining company Inco and private equity moves on other companies notably Bell Canada undergo stripped the Toronto Stock transfer of many large listings. London has poached the title of the mining industry’s financial center and a recent change in Canadian tax law eliminated restrictions requiring a majority of retirement investments into Canadian companies. But now for the first time in decades the T. S. E is about to approach direct competition in its domiciliate market. Pure Trading which is based in Toronto plans to start an alternative market late next week the first of several new competitors. A back up large exchange called Alpha is being planned by an alliance of Canada’s large banks which dominate the brokerage business with some institutional investors and a broker. Even before the competition begins it has raised questions about the ability of Canada’s relatively small financial sector to support the exchanges and about the future of the T. S. E. says the New York Times. “The Toronto Stock Exchange is no longer the equivalent of the New York Stock Exchange. You only undergo to be at the composition of the exchange to see that we’re now lacking a whole be of types of companies,” Laurence Booth a professor of pay at the University of Toronto told The Times. “Toronto is a have exchange that has to bring home the bacon out its own series of directions and a strategy.” Michael Sheridan the president and chief executive of Norstar Securities in Toronto is among the few in Canada’s financial community who will publicly address the new exchange according to The Times. “It’s not really a voluntary thing,” he told The Times of the decision. “The regulators undergo said that you have to get the best price for a client. If it’s an alternative system you have to use it. It’s a small market in Canada so this makes everyone’s life very difficult.” Mr. Sheridan expects Alpha to succeed in part because many large trades currently done on the T. S. E are arranged in advance by the big banks and institutional investors. When the banks’ system is running many of those deals will be executed without the T. S. E middleman. But the success of Pure Trading and other broad alternative markets may hinge on luring a substantial volume of trades. “It’s going to be difficult for someone to compete in such a small market with the T. S. X. which has such a hold on the market and which spends a lot on technology,” Mr. Sheridan said. “They may just spend the others out of existence.”
